Michael Helak joined the Prairie Meadows Board of Directors in November 2009. As Central Region President of U.S. Bank, N.A., his primary duties include divisional responsibility for the middle market commercial lending unit, small business lending team, Commercial Real Estate group, Private Banking and Wealth Management Groups and the Retail/ Consumer group. Michael graduated from University of Arizona with a degree in finance and a minor in economics.
He began his career in Kansas City in 1980 at UMB Bank as a credit analyst, loan review officer and commercial banking officer. He then spent two years with a regional investment-banking firm (AF Stepp Investments) in the municipal institutional sales and underwriting areas.
Michael returned to banking in 1984 with First National Bank of Kansas City (subsequently merged into Boatmen’s First National Bank of Kansas City, NationsBank, and then Bank of America). The majority of his assignments were in commercial banking including commercial account management for regional and national corporate clients, management of the Regional Corporate and National Groups, and responsibility for the bank’s International Banking Department. While with NationsBank, he managed the Commercial Growth Group. He moved to Des Moines joining US Bank as Regional President in 1998.
Michael is a director and finance committee chairman for the Greater Des Moines Partnership and serves on the 2030 Task Force. He currently serves the following organizations, which he formerly chaired: Junior Achievement of Central Iowa Executive Committee, Greater Des Moines Committee (Treasurer). In addition, Michael is treasurer and board member of the Board of Governors for the Iowa College Foundation.
He previously served as past campaign cabinet member, Focus Group chair, and executive committee member of the United Way of Central Iowa. He served on the legislative committee for the Iowa Bankers Association and he currently serves on that organization’s board of directors. He is past director of Des Moines Development Corporation and Neighborhood Improvement Corporation. In addition, he was state board member and Honorary Walk America Chairman (2002-2003) for March of Dimes of Central Iowa, and was a board member of the US Bank Political Action Committee for Iowa and Nebraska.
Michael and Cathy Helak have three children, Nicole, Megan, and Jonathan.
