Gene Meyer

Gene Meyer is President of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. His key responsibilities include supporting the Partnership’s role in implementing the region’s strategic vision plan “Capital Crossroads,” elevating the alliance between business and education in central Iowa, and developing strategic direction for the next phase of the Partnership’s work.  Gene began his role with the Partnership in March 2011 as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives.

Gene has extensive professional and political experience in regional strategy development and implementation, having served three elected terms on the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education (1988-1997). He also served as Mayor of West Des Moines from 1997 through 2006. During that leadership role, he served on both the Metropolitan Advisory Council and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. He also led a collaborative effort to consolidate services in western suburban cities.

His professional career spans 37 years with the State of Iowa Department of Public Safety in which he most recently served as Commissioner in 2007 under the appointment of Governor Chet Culver.

Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, a master’s degree in public administration from Drake University, and he is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy (Quantico, Virginia).

Gene and Kathy Meyer live in Madison County, Iowa. They have two sons, Matt and Adam, and a daughter, Abby.
